Nivolumab (Opdivo) helps shrink tumors, helps patients with advanced melanoma to live longer and decreases the risk of the melanoma coming back after surgery. It is also approved for adjuvant therapy.

Researchers conducted follow-up for a median of 8.4 months in the Opdivo plus Yervoy group, 9.9 months in the Opdivo alone group and 9.1 months in the placebo group. During follow-up, overall survival was a median of 9.2 months with Opdivo plus Yervoy, 10.4 months with Opdivo and 9.6 months with placebo.

What happens when you stop Opdivo?

Opdivo may cause your immune system to attack healthy tissues or organs. This can happen anytime during or after stopping Opdivo treatment.

How do I know if Opdivo is working?

To tell if you’re responding to treatment with Opdivo your doctor will order periodic tests, such as CT (computed tomography) and PET (positron emission tomography) scans and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). These tests help work out whether the size of your tumors is changing or new tumors have appeared.

Does Opdivo cause hair loss?

When your thyroid hormone levels are too low, hair loss can occur. In clinical studies, 9% of people who took Opdivo on its own had low thyroid hormone levels. Of those who took Opdivo with another cancer drug called ipilimumab, 15% to 22% of people had low thyroid hormone levels.
